These unusual ballast gondolas were built for the SP as their W-50-3 class. Similar gondolas were also used by their subsiduary interurban company Pacific Electric.

A number of other railroads used very similar if not identical cars for MoW service.

The cars were convertible, either with the end boards placed at the end of the cars, or towards the center of the car where the end of the center dump hoppers are. All configurations of the convertible gondolas are possible with the kit. Built in 1911 by Rodger Ballast Car company to a Hart patent, 105 of the cars were still in service in 1950, but scrapped by 1955.

The cars had substantial steel trusses inside the side frame, but despite this many were sway backed in serrvice!

The W-50-3 series cars were numbered 10880-10959, 12220-12519 and 12520-12639.
PE numbered their cars 6200-6249

The cars are in cast metal. There are two styles available, the SP version had 3 plank sides, and the PE had 5 plank sides. Please check which car you want and order as appropriate above. We used MTL #1036 trucks. However, in early service the cars used Andrews trucks. We used #1023 (assembled) or 1025 (kits) couplers.
