These cars were introduced early 1987, to fill the need for lightweight articulated intermodal cars on routes that did not have clearance for double stack cars. Previously containers were carried on flat cars with a heavy tare weight, or single stacked in double stack cars, which is not an efficient use of equipment. These cars have a lower tare weight, and reduced slack action due to articulation. They can carry 20ft or 40-48ft containers.
